If you want a melee character capable of dealing massive amounts of damage in a short amount of time then the Berserker class is right for you. At higher levels a Berserker is a motion blur of death killing weak/medium class (Ranks 1/2) enemies in a single hit and is capable of clearing an area in the span of only a few seconds (even trolls can be taken down in a matter of seconds).
At early levels the Berserker's low health can be a big problem if one is not careful. There are, however, a number of ways to counteract this problem: Equipping armor that boosts health and/or has bonuses to your overall armor total, and using weapons that increase damage and attack speed.
You have 3 choices when it comes to your fighting style: Speed (left), Strength (right) and Slow (middle). It is my recommendation that you chose between Speed or Strength because while Slow has its uses (namely it slows down your enemies' movements), in the end the other two options are, in my opinion, the better paths (although you can always change your path later if you find you don't like the one you've chosen).
Of the two, I prefer the Speed path. When combined with the Speed path of the Human Alignment, the berserker can dispatch large groups of enemies with ease.
For melee weapon selection, the type of weapon you should use depends on what path you take. Many of the berserker skills give bonuses to dual wield weapons, so those are usually a good choice. However, you may find hammers and 2-handed swords to be useful, with the berserker's increased weapon speed and fast sliding countering the slow base speed of the larger weapons.
